What does "original" Pilates mean?

"Original" Pilates refers to the method taught for more than 60 years by the American school of Romana Kryzanowska on the basis of the teachings she received directly from Joseph in her New York studio.

I’ve heard there are various forms of Pilates. Why should I try this form of Pilates?

Over the years, Pilates has taken on many different shapes and forms as it has passed from teacher to teacher. At Anca Pilates it’s the exercises and philosophies of Joseph and Clara Pilates that we teach, as handed down to their world renowned protégé Romana Kryzanowska.

I’ve never done Pilates before and how do I start?

Anyone can begin Pilates, at any age and any fitness level. We are here to make your decision an easy one. We will give you a tour of the facilities, discuss your goals one-on-one, and determine the best plan for you and your budget.

Am I too old/young to take Pilates?

Throughout your lifetime the body changes continually and the Pilates method adapts to the challenges and strengths of all ages.

I'm over 50, can I try Pilates?

Many Pilates enthusiasts begin Pilates after the age of 50 after discovering it can promote a strong and healthy lifestyle. Our clients range in age from 13 to 86.

Can men benefit from Pilates?

Joe Pilates developed his system of exercise primarily on men, on wounded and ill soldiers during WWI and while training boxers. Building a strong core helps to protect the back and improve efficiency with golf, tennis or weightlifting, especially for "week-end warriors". Pilates increases flexibility for a greater range of motion and ease of movement necessary for sports like skiing or basketball.

Am I too out of shape to start?

Pilates is designed to accommodate any level of fitness. Every private session is customized to your body for the best workout . As your body changes so does your workout.
As with any exercise program, it is important to check with a physician before beginning. If you are pregnant, injured, or in any way incapacitated, it is imperative that you get the approval of your doctor first.

I have a bad back, can I still do Pilates?

The short answer is YES!. Pilates will help strengthen your core muscles which will strengthen your back. Pilates is a great way to strengthen your back and core muscles, and also allows you to get back into a regular workout routine.

How often should I do Pilates?

According to Joseph Pilates, three times a week is ideal; that is when you will reap the most benefit. To maximize your results, we suggest booking at least two appointments per week. Even though some people may start out with Pilates once or twice a week, they soon realize the overall healthy benefits of feeling good and doing good, and happily increase their schedules.

What results should I expect to see, and when?

You will notice improved posture, strength and flexibility within a few short weeks. You will also lengthen your muscles and strengthen your core, which will help you to tone up and potentially lose inches. The results will vary depending on how often you exercise, the food choices you make, and your routine.

What can I expect in my session?

Most sessions are 50-55 minutes long but may be shorter at the instructor's discretion. In the beginning, most of the work focuses on the Pilates method series of exercises designed to strengthen and elongate the body, and strengthening the 'core', the center of your body.

How do I know what instructor to book my appointment with?

Book based on time, not on instructor! All of our instructors are certified through the top internationally recognized, year-long intensive training program and will provide you with guidance in the authentic Pilates method whether you are a beginner or advanced student!

What happens if my desired time is not available?

Keep checking the calendar and App, last minute cancellations occur, and you can book up to 2 hours in advance of available appointment. We may be available to open the schedule on additional days / times that work for you. Please don't hesitate to ask

How do I pay for Anca Pilates?

We accept cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

When do my appointment packages expire?

Session credits expire two weeks, 120, 180, and 365 days from the date of purchase of a series or package of 3, 10, 30, or 50 private sessions

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

All appointments are subject to a 24-hour cancellation and rescheduling policy. In order to cancel or reschedule an appointment and have the session credit returned to your account, you must complete your cancellation or rescheduled appointment through the App or online system as well as receive an automated email confirmation of the cancellation or rescheduled appointment. Emailing or calling the studio or notifying your instructor does not constitute a cancellation. Appointments cancelled or rescheduled less than 24-hours prior to the reservation will incur late cancellation charges for the original appointment in addition to charges for the new appointment.
Instructors may be subject to change due to scheduling or emergencies in which case another instructor will be made available and the appointment is still subject to the policy above

What should I wear for Pilates?

Workout clothing is the most practical and will allow you to see the muscles you are working, but any comfortable clothing will do. Clothing with zippers is prohibited. You will be asked to remove your shoes before entering the studio floor so please wear socks or bring a pair of socks with you for the class.
